It didn’t take long for Schlage to jump into the end-user, resettable lock sandbox with their SECUREKEY. The convenience that they offered the customer with their “Blue Key” reset key and end-user key change capability was, as far as marketing is concerned, a solid competitive answer to Kwikset’s offering. However, in my opinion it was an even less then stellar product and fraught with even more surprises for the customer.

Schlage no longer makes the SecureKey, but while they did, their retailers sold a blue zillion of them and there will probably be SecureKey locks for locksmith to service, rekey and replace for years to come.

Too often when I write, talk about, or demonstrate a service procedure on a product; I have a brand-new, just out-of-the-box lock or piece of hardware. This video is a radical departure from that “new” lock syndrome. The lock I’m going to show you in this video was installed by me on a residence about 15 years ago!

It is the DIGITAL lock by LOCKEY of Mt. Pleasant, MI.

It’s obvious from the photograph that this lock has seen some heavy use. It’s also notable that the lock is still functioning as well as it did when I first installed it.

My purpose here is to show those of you who are not familiar with this type of lock how to change the combination; or determine a “lost” combination by simply looking at the backside of the outside portion of the lock.
